Definition:
All the time; always available; without a break.

Example:

Etymology:
Some convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The phrase is used for anything that is always (or nearly always) available.

Synonyms:

airhead


Definition:
Someone who isn't very smart; a stupid person.

Example:
1)
Susan and Jim are such airheads -- they love sports but they are failing all of their classes at school!

2)
I woudn't ask Alaine for the answer -- she's an airhead!

Etymology:
If your head is filled with air instead of brains, you probably can't think very well.

Definition:
Listening carefully; keenly attentive.

Example:

I was all ears as Svet told me this exciting story.

Etymology:
You listen with your ears, so if you are 'all ears' your entire being is listening to someone speak

Definition:
A study or work session that goes through the night; studying without sleep ( usually a last-minute course of action ).

Example:

) We pulled an all-nighter to finish the report.

I pulled an all-nighter to study for my math exam.

Etymology:
The term is popular with college students who spend the night before an exam studying ( or ‘cramming’ ), trying to learn a lot of material in a short period of time. The term is frequently used in the phrase ‘ pull an all-nighter

Definition:
A large amount of money; very expensive or costly.

Example:

Etymology:
Some things are so expensive that they are painful to buy, and cost everything you have.

To be nervous or anxious or jumpy; to be unable to sit still.

Example:

The children had ants in their pants, so we took them outside for some exercise.

Etymology:
If you had 'ants' (small insects) in your 'pants' (clothing) you would probably feel like jumping around.

To be 'on your feet' means that you are standing. So if you are 'back on your feet', it means that you are standing again, after a period of lying down due to sickness.

A troublemaker; someone who has a bad attitude and causes trouble.

Example
1)
Emily is a real bad egg -- she's always starting fights and causing trouble.

Etymology
In this phrase, 'egg' means 'person' or 'individual'. This is probably because the human head looks a lot like an egg. A bad egg, then, is a simply a bad person. There is a similar phrase to describe a good person - a 'good egg'.

Prison, particularly a maximum security federal prison ( or jail )

Example
1) After he got caught robbing a bank, Ted was sent to the big house for 20 years.

Etymology
A 'house' is where people live, and a prison is quite large 9 or 'big'), home to hundreds of criminals. This phrase became popular in the early 1900's, when organized crime and large scale prisons developed in the United States.

To die.

DOA comes from the first letters of the phrase 'dead on arrival', which is used in hospitals to describe dead people who are brought to the emergency room. As slang, the term can be used to describe anything that is no longer possible

Etymology
The typical American workday ends at 'five o'clock' in the afternoon. A 'shadow' is a patch of darkness, or a hint of the presence of something. After spending a full day at work for eight or more hours, many men have a noticeable growth of facial hair, which is dark like a 'shadow' and hints at the beard that would grow if left unshaven.

A social outcast or misfit; a strange person

Example

Stephan has no friends and spends all his time in the basement. What a freak !

The protest rally was filled with hippies and freaks.

Etymology
In the 1700s, 'freaked' meant 'covered with spots or colors'. By 1900, 'freak' meant 'irregular' or 'not normal', perhaps in reference to spots of color as imperfections in a manufacturing process. Today, 'freak' has a surprising number of meanings, all coming from the sense of 'irregular', including: an hippie, a drug addict, crazy behavior ( as in 'He freaked when I told him I wrecked his car'), a ***ually promiscuous person, an unusually beautiful woman.

Definition
Speech that doesn't make sense; nonsensical words and phrases.

Example
1)
The stranger sat on the bench speaking gibberish to himself.

2)
Sometimes it sounds like the computer programmers are speaking in gibberish. I'm sure the code stands for something though.

Etymology
This comes from the Scandanavian words gibe/gipa/gape, which refer to joking or nonsensical talk. The '-ish' ending means 'from the place where they speak gibber (or nonsense)'.

gobbledegook, mumbo jumb

Glamorous; wearing fashionable clothes and make-up, particularly when done to excess.

Example

She's so glam that people think she's a model.

'Glam' is short for 'glamorous'. Glam and glamorous refer to the magical attraction and excitement produced by celebrities.

'Glue' is a sticky substance that holds things together, so if you are 'glued to your seat' you are stuck in your chair due to your great interest in what you are seeing or hearing.

The deep water, which is at the 'deep end' of a pool, is dangerous. You can get lost in the deep end. This phrase refers to that danger, but in an emotional rather than physical sense.

To be extremely angry.

When the bank told me that they lost my paycheck, I went off the deep end.

Definition
To have a realistic chance of something happening; to be able to do something. (Frequently used in the negative -- 'not have a prayer'.)

Example
1)
Eric doesn't have a prayer of passing the math exam today.

2)
Do the Red Sox have a prayer of winning the World Series?

Etymology
When something is very difficult, you might 'pray' for assistance. If something 'has a prayer', it might succeed if it gets a little bit of assistance from above. But if it 'doesn't have a prayer', not even divine intervention will help.

To be a little bit crazy, or not acting normally.
