Etymology: Some convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The phrase is used for anything that is always (or nearly always) available. Synonyms: around the clock === Definition: Someone who isn't very smart; a stupid person. Example: 1) Susan and Jim are such airheads -- they love sports but they are failing all of their classes at school! 2) I woudn't ask Alaine for the answer -- she's an airhead! Etymology: If your head is filled with air instead of brains, you probably can't think very well. Synonyms: ditz === Definition: Listening carefully; keenly attentive. Example: 1) I was all ears as Svet told me this exciting story. Etymology: You listen with your ears, so if you are 'all ears' your entire being is listening to someone speak ==== Definition: A study or work session that goes through the night; studying without sleep ( usually a last-minute course of action ). Example: 1 ) We pulled an all-nighter to finish the report. 2) I pulled an all-nighter to study for my math exam. Etymology: The term is popular with college students who spend the night before an exam studying ( or ‘cramming’ ), trying to learn a lot of material in a short period of time. The term is frequently used in the phrase ‘ pull an all-nighter === Definition: A large amount of money; very expensive or costly. Example: 1) My new Mercedes cost me an arm and a leg! Etymology: Some things are so expensive that they are painful to buy, and cost everything you have. === Definition: To be nervous or anxious or jumpy; to be unable to sit still. Example: 1) The children had ants in their pants, so we took them outside for some exercise. 2) Would you please stop tapping your foot?! You must have ants in your pants! Etymology: If you had 'ants' (small insects) in your 'pants' (clothing) you would probably feel like jumping around. Synonyms: antsy |

Example Rick has been in the hospital for a week, but he'll be back on his feet in no time. Etymolog To be 'on your feet' means that you are standing. So if you are 'back on your feet', it means that you are standing again, after a period of lying down due to sickness. Synonyms back in the saddle ======= Definition A troublemaker; someone who has a bad attitude and causes trouble. Example 1) Emily is a real bad egg -- she's always starting fights and causing trouble. 2) We have to get rid of the bad eggs in the accounting department. Etymology In this phrase, 'egg' means 'person' or 'individual'. This is probably because the human head looks a lot like an egg. A bad egg, then, is a simply a bad person. There is a similar phrase to describe a good person - a 'good egg'. ====== Definition Crazy; hopelessly broken down Example 1) After his wife left him, Paul was a real basket case. 2) The corporation was such a basket case that the owners had to shut it down. Etymology From World war I lingo, used to describe a soldier so badly wounded that he had to be carried in a basket. ==== Definition To say negative things about someone or something. Example 1) Lisa bad-mouthed her boss at the water cooler. 2) I wish people would stop bad-mouthing Cleveland. It’s really a very nice city. Etymology “ Bad “ means not good, and ‘ mouth’ refers to the physical act of speech. ====== Definition Prison, particularly a maximum security federal prison ( or jail ) Example 1) After he got caught robbing a bank, Ted was sent to the big house for 20 years. Etymology A 'house' is where people live, and a prison is quite large 9 or 'big'), home to hundreds of criminals. This phrase became popular in the early 1900's, when organized crime and large scale prisons developed in the United States. Synonyms up the river, under glass, behind bars ====== Definition To die. Example Lance bought the farm when he drove his motorcycle straight into a brick wall. Etymology Sometimes, when a person dies, the life insurance payment is large enough for the surviving family members to pay off the mortgage on a piece of property - or to 'buy the farm'. |

Example 1) Lisa wanted to jump off the high diving board, but she got cold feet once she got up there. 2) The investors got cold feet and called the deal off. Etymology If your 'feet' are 'cold', you can't walk or move forward very well - you are frozen in one place ==== Definition One who sits in front of the television for long periods of time, with little or no physical activity. Example 1) My roommate is such a couch potato - last weekend he watched television for 14 hours straight! Etymology A 'potato' is a vegetable that just sits there, doing nothing. === Definition To fail or stop functioning Example My computer crashed just when I was going to print my paper! Definition To collapse from exhaustion or fatigue; to get rest. Example 1) I finally crashed after working 8 hours straight. 2) Is it all right if I crash at your house tonight? ==== Definition Something which is very obvious and clear; not requiring further explanation. The Letter D Definition Excellent, the best. Example Michael Jordan was da bomb -- he was the greatest basketball player ever! Etymology 'Da bomb' is African-American slang that became popular in the 1990s. 'Da' is an informal way to say 'the', and 'bomb' refers to something very powerful and explosive. Synonyms phat Definition Very old; out of date; obsolete. Example 1) That cell phone you're using is a real dinosaur. When did you get it, 1983? 2) Svet loves the Rolling Stones and all of those other dinosaur rock bands. Etymology A 'dinosaur' is an ancient animal that no longer exists. As slang, it refers to anything that is outdated and no longer desirable. Definition To insult someone (verb), or the insult itself (noun). Example 1) Did you hear that? That guy dissed you! 2) Don't let me hear another dis out of your mouth, young man! Etymology 'Dis' is African-American slang, and comes from the word DISrespect. [ Definition To leave an unwanted person, place or thing behind; to get rid of something or someone. Example 1) Terry ditched his girlfriend so he could go hang out with his friends. 2) When are you going to ditch that ugly old hat? Etymology A 'ditch' is a hole in the ground. The informal meaning of the word comes from the idea that you can hide or get rid of something in a ditch. Definition Hopeless or futile; something that cannot be repaired or salvaged. Example 1) The local football team decided to move to another city, so our proposal for a new stadium was DOA. 2) The victim was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors pronounced him DOA. Etymology DOA comes from the first letters of the phrase 'dead on arrival', which is used in hospitals to describe dead people who are brought to the emergency room. As slang, the term can be used to describe anything that is no longer possible [ Definition Something or someone that is depressing; anything that makes one sad. Example 1) Matt was a real downer last night -- all he could talk about were his problems. 2) It was a real downer to hear that all those kids got killed in the school bus accident. Etymology When you are filled with positive emotions and happy thoughts, you are 'up'. When you are sad and depressed, you are 'down'. Example Tom's a real early bird--he's always the first person at the office in the morning. Etymology This phrase comes from the proverb, "The early bird catches the worm." Definition One who is shot at with a gun is said to 'eat lead'; as an exclamation, the phrase is directed toward the intended target. Example "Eat lead!" yelled the bank robber as he fired his gun at the police outside. Etymology A bullet is made of lead so when a gun is fired at someone, the intended target might be 'eating lead' -- that is, bringing the bullet inside their body. Definition An overly intellectual person; someone who thinks too much. Example 1) Charles can't order lunch without using an algebraic formula -- what an egghead! 2) Those eggheads in the media are always giving advice, but they don't know anything about real life. Etymology Presumably, someone who thinks a lot must have a big brain, and their head must be large enough to hold their brain. A large head might be shaped something like a giant egg. Synonyms nerd Definition A person or thing that gets in the way; a burden that you are stuck with. Example Ed wants to leave his wife and kids - he feels like they are just excess baggage. Etymology When you fly on a plane, there are limits on how much luggage (or how many suitcases or bags) you can bring with you. Anything over the limit is called 'excess baggage' (or extra bags) and cannot be put on the plane. Synonyms fifth wheel |

Definition A person who has great wealth and power; a tycoon. Example 1) Many of the city's fat cats eat at that steak restaurant on First Avenue. 2) Those fat cats in Washington are going to keep pressuring Congress to pass the tax bill. Etymology This term comes from the 1920s, when it was used to describe wealthy contributors to American political parties. Synonyms big shot Definition Facial stubble; a man's beard at the end of the day. Example Peter has a very heavy beard -- even though he shaves every morning, he gets a five o'clock shadow by lunchtime! Etymology The typical American workday ends at 'five o'clock' in the afternoon. A 'shadow' is a patch of darkness, or a hint of the presence of something. After spending a full day at work for eight or more hours, many men have a noticeable growth of facial hair, which is dark like a 'shadow' and hints at the beard that would grow if left unshaven. Definition A social outcast or misfit; a strange person Example 1) Stephan has no friends and spends all his time in the basement. What a freak ! 2) The protest rally was filled with hippies and freaks. Etymology In the 1700s, 'freaked' meant 'covered with spots or colors'. By 1900, 'freak' meant 'irregular' or 'not normal', perhaps in reference to spots of color as imperfections in a manufacturing process. Today, 'freak' has a surprising number of meanings, all coming from the sense of 'irregular', including: an hippie, a drug addict, crazy behavior ( as in 'He freaked when I told him I wrecked his car'), a ***ually promiscuous person, an unusually beautiful woman. |

Example 1) The stranger sat on the bench speaking gibberish to himself. 2) Sometimes it sounds like the computer programmers are speaking in gibberish. I'm sure the code stands for something though. Etymology This comes from the Scandanavian words gibe/gipa/gape, which refer to joking or nonsensical talk. The '-ish' ending means 'from the place where they speak gibber (or nonsense)'. Synonyms gobbledegook, mumbo jumb Definition Glamorous; wearing fashionable clothes and make-up, particularly when done to excess. Example 1) She's so glam that people think she's a model. 2) I love David Bowie and all of those glam rockers. Etymology 'Glam' is short for 'glamorous'. Glam and glamorous refer to the magical attraction and excitement produced by celebrities. Definition To be extremely interested in something; to be so involved with something that you cannot move. Example 1) As soon as the movie started, Holly was glued to her seat. Etymology 'Glue' is a sticky substance that holds things together, so if you are 'glued to your seat' you are stuck in your chair due to your great interest in what you are seeing or hearing. Definition To be irrational and wild; to lose control. Example I knew Joe would go bananas when he found out he's not getting a raise this year. Etymology When apes are given a bunch of bananas, they eat them with tremendous enthusiasm, as though they've lost their minds. Synonyms go crazy, bonkers Definition To be wildly enthusiastic. Example Alaine went bananas over the new shoes from Manolo Blahnik. I think she bought five pairs! Definition To go too far with something; to do something crazy. Etymology The deep water, which is at the 'deep end' of a pool, is dangerous. You can get lost in the deep end. This phrase refers to that danger, but in an emotional rather than physical sense. Synonyms lose one's mind Definition To be extremely angry. Example When the bank told me that they lost my paycheck, I went off the deep end. Definition Someone who is blamed when things go wrong. The Letter H Definition To have a realistic chance of something happening; to be able to do something. (Frequently used in the negative -- 'not have a prayer'.) Example 1) Eric doesn't have a prayer of passing the math exam today. 2) Do the Red Sox have a prayer of winning the World Series? Etymology When something is very difficult, you might 'pray' for assistance. If something 'has a prayer', it might succeed if it gets a little bit of assistance from above. But if it 'doesn't have a prayer', not even divine intervention will help. Definition To be a little bit crazy, or not acting normally. Example Paul has had a screw loose ever since his girlfriend left him. Etymology A 'screw' keeps things together; when a screw is loose, things fall apart. So a person who has a screw loose is falling apart mentally. Synonyms off the wall Definition A psychiatrist; a doctor who helps people with mental problems. Example 1) I've been seeing a head doctor for several years. 2) You seem emotionally disturbed. Maybe you ought to see a head doctor? Etymology Psychiatrists are medical doctors who treat the mind, which is related to the brain, which is in the head. Synonyms shrink Definition A way to say 'Bravo!' or 'Good job!' by slapping someone's hand in the air; to congratulate someone. Example 1) Nice shot! High five, dude! 2) High fives all around on the excellent presentation at the meeting! Etymology There are five fingers on your hand, and you lift your hand high into the air to give a 'high five'. This is a common gesture first used by African-American basketball players and now used by many people in a variety of con****s. You can also give a 'low five' or go 'down low' after giving someone a high five. Definition Very secret Example 1) The operation was so hush-hush that even the commanding officer didn't know all of the details. 2) Let's keep that information hush-hush, OK ? Etymology 'Hush' means 'quiet'. So something that is 'hush-hush' should not be discussed or exposed in public. This phrase dates back to World War I, when it referred to military secrets. So if a person is 'in your hair', they are annoying and hard to get rid of. Definition In trouble; the ****** of anger or scorn. Example 1) Tom was in the doghouse after he was late for dinner with his wife's parents. 2) My report at work was late and now I'm in the doghouse with my boss Etymology A 'doghouse' is a small hut or house for a pet dog to sleep in. When you are 'in the doghouse,' you are not literally outside in the doghouse. Rather, the phrase means that someone is angry with you, and thinks you should be punished (by being treated like a bad dog). |

Definition A person who thinks they know everything; someone who annoys other people by always having the answer to every question. Etymology 'Know' refers to what is in your brain, and 'all' is everything, so a know-it-all has everything in his brain -- or at least thinks he does. Definition A punch in the face. The Letter L Definition An unreal place; a fantastic dreamworld. Etymology 'La la' sounds childlike and dreamy, so 'la la land' is a dream world without adult problems and concerns. Definition To connect to a computer or computer network. Example 1) I log on to check my email several times a day. 2) I couldn't log on last night. There must be something wrong with my phone line. Etymology When you enter or 'sign on to' a computer, your activity is recorded in an electronic 'log file'. A 'log' is a record of events, like a diary, and 'on' refers to entering the file. Since computers became popular in the 1970s, 'log on', 'log in', and 'login' have become very common terms. Definition According to fate or chance. Example 1) everyone else's computer works just fine, but mine is broken. I guess that's the luck of the draw. Etymology When playing cards, you 'draw a hand', which means that you get a random set of cards. The cards that are dealt are called 'the draw'. The Letter O Definition: To be extremely happy, elated Example: I was on cloud nine after I got the promotion. Etymology: Derived from the idea that clouds are part of heavenly paradise, and that the higher you go, the closer you are to ultimate bliss. Definition: To fall asleep very quickly. Example: 1) After working a twelve hour shift yesterday, I was out like a light as soon as I got into bed. Etymology: A lamp goes out as soon as you turn it off. So if you are 'out' (asleep) like a light (lamp or light bulb), you have gone to sleep as soon as your head hit the pillow. Definition: A phrase indicating that someone is leaving. Example: 1) I'm outta here! See you next week! 2) It looks like Stephan is finally outta here -- we will miss him as the chicken misses flight. Etymology: This slang comes from the phrase 'out of here', which is also used used to indicate that you are leaving (or going out of) this place (or here). |
